A client recently changed the name of their company. Is it possible to change a domain group name or best to create a new group and move the domains to that?

Yes, group names can be changed. Someone with write access to a domain group can change its name through the management tab. Change the name in the “Rename Group” field and click on the “RENAME” button for it to take effect. If you don’t see the management tab, or can edit it, then it is likely due to a lack of permission.
